Hypoxia and Medicine

Hypoxia Vs. Asphyxia?

Can someone give me a simple explanation on the relationship of Hypoxia to Asphyxia?

  1. Hypoxia can be due to internal causes such as brain injury or COPD or emphysema that interrupts normal o2 uptake. asphyxia is the cutting off of oxygen to the lungs thru external sources such as strangulation or smothering, or chemical overwhelm such as carbon monoxide.
  2. Asphyxia occurs from the inability to ventilate ... leading to elevated CO2 in the body and subsequently low oxygen levels (hypoxia) .... asphyxia can occur from choking ... compession of the chest .... etc
  3. Asphyxia can cause hypoxia. Asphyxia is the obstruction of air enterning the body. Hypoxia is condition of the blood not having enought oxygen. hypo=low ox=oxygen ia=relating to.
  4. If you are asphyxiated you with become hypoxic. Asphyxia (from Greek a-, "without" and σφυγμός (sphygmos), "pulse, heartbeat") is a condition of severely deficient supply of oxygen to the body that arises from being unable to breathe normally ( or an intrauterine insult ). An example of Asphyxia is choking. Asphyxia causes generalized hypoxia. Hypoxia (medical), a shortage of oxygen in the body ( cells). Hypoxemia is the reduction of oxygen specifically in the blood; anoxia is when there is no oxygen available at all.
