  1. Start with the Social Security Administration. There is a bit of paper work to fill out and I've been told by everyone from dr.s to lawyers that everyone is denied the first time. After denial get an attorney, almost all will work with you on SSD only expecting payment after you receive settlement .ssd payment is retro, when ssdis approved it starts the day you initially filed the claim.
  2. It is a long drawn out process but if the physician reccomends disability then your father will more than likely have to hire an attorney to get help. I went through it and i had three specialists saying I should be receiving help. When I needed help the most i had to spend my money to get it. The attorney will take a quarter of the amount and then you also have all the medical bills while not being able to work. Also the first five months you get nothing. My advice would be to get the ball rolling now because they take forever and some of us do not have forever. The best of luck to you and your father.
  3. First of all let me say how sorry I am that your dad is in bad shape. I have been there and know it's just the pits. I've been through it. Since it seems as if your dad is in pretty bad shape, you might want to see an attorney to speed up the disability process. It will cost a little money up front, but it will be worth it to get your dad the money he needs. If he has been employed and paid into social security, he might be able to get his benefits in one lump sum very soon. Find yourself a good disability attorney. If you are not his power of attorney and health care surrogate yet, you need to look into that also. Someone on morphine is not allowed to sign much, so you are going to have to act as his power of attorney and make decisions for him. If you are his primary care giver, you could get paid to take care of him. If he doesn't already have plans for hospice/home care, and a living will you need to take care of that right away also. I want you to remember this: you have to ask for help when you need it and do not take "no" for an answer if your gut tells you differently. Get second or third opinions if you want. Be sure you lean on friends and family to help out, they need to be supportive of your efforts. Take care, best of luck to you.
