Could my partner realistically get on SSI?
My boyfriend of five years has been living with me for the past three years, and I have been supporting him. He has several medical issues which we haven't been able to address, since neither of us can afford insurance (I'm 25 and he's 27, by the way). He's got a pilonidal cyst which causes him great pain and keeps him from sleeping at times, and chronic allergies. He's stuffed up ALL DAY, EVERY DAY, sneezing in fits of up to 20 at a time. We've tried Benadryl, Claritin, and even Allegra. The worst is that he has sleep apnea, which causes him to stop breathing in his sleep and he wakes up after nine hours exhausted and unrested. He always feels sick. I make about $1900 a month, but after rent, utilities, insurance, etc, and a huge tax debt I have to pay off, I'm not able to afford to pay his expenses, much less afford medical care. My question is: What should I do? Could these conditions be enough for him to qualify for SSI, or should I not even waste my time applying?

- For SSDI and SSI medical documentation is needed to support the claim. However he can stil file. Sorry
- You don't say where you live but if you are in the states then you need to take him to the welfare office in the city you live in. Have him fill the application out saying he is renting from you but has no income, and is sick. He may be able to get medical insurance through that most states have a insurance program for people like him. Start there, You have to prove that he can not work to get SSI and every application get turned down once you might at that time hire an attorney they don't get money unless they win and they usually do. Good luck.
- He doesn't need SSI (disability) at this point - he needs health insurance. it sounds like he should qualify for Medicaid, and perhaps until he can be treated for his medical problems, he will qualify for public assistance (food stamps and cash, and help with rent). He needs to visit the local social services office and discuss his options with them.
