depression recovery?
I made a decision to admit and fight my chronic depression about ten months ago. I don't remember much of the previous five or six years. I basically went to work, slept, and drowned out my feelings through alcohol, poker, and loud music. I'm happier today, but sometimes wonder if I'll ever fully recover. I've lost 35 pounds so far (out of a goal of 80), moved in with my best friend since childhood, who is a personal trainer, and enrolled in college. I guess my question is....do you think it's necessary for me to seek medical help? I'd rather do it on my own, but I do know that it is considered a medical condition.

- I don't think it's necessary to seek medical help, especially if you can control it on your own. I believe people can fight certain things and win on their own. I, however, had to seek medical help.
- I would say your fine honey. Unless things start to change then I would go in but I too like to do it on my own. I have bi-polar and hate taking meds and seeing shrinks so I do it on my own unless I hit a rough patch then I go in and talk to a psychologist, I use them cuz they can't prescribe pills which all Dr. want to do. You know when you need help get it then otherwise keep doing what your doing it seems to be working.
- Just do it yourself, it seems like your on the right track. But if you do feel like you would go back to those things than you should get professional help. Good luck !!!
- I've been sleep walking for years too. Eventually, the depression and stress wore me down to the point where I got seriously ill and didn't work for 2 years straight. I'm not by any means telling you to pop pills. I tried about 6 different ones. They weren't for me. Therapy with a psychiatrist has helped me though. I grew up in a family that didn't talk- I had to learn how to talk about my feelings. So, the battle continues but I've got support- and that's important. There are some things you don't want to burden others with that you can dump on a shrink. Give omega 3 fish oils a shot (go for 1 g EPA for 3 months and see how you feel). Look for enteic coated ones and save yourself some nausea. That's my 2 cents. Cheers.
- It sounds as though everything is going good, even though 5 years were wasted. The thing about mental health is that you don't want to self-treat. Also, if you were to seek a doctor's help, possibly you wouldn't need to be on medication for a long time. The doctor can really cut through the crap and help you realize if what you had was depression or actually something else, or if you may get a bad patch like the previous one. If you have insurance, it won't be expensive.
