How does hypoxia cause cell damage?
Public Comments
- There is a lack of oxygen to the cell.. which damages or kills the cell..
- Cells need oxygen to survive, if you are in hypoxia it means you are not getting enough oxygen, which kills some cells.. including neurons. Oxygen is transported in blood by red cells... and they feed every other cells in oour bodies.
- Hypoxia literally means "deficient in oxygen." Your cells need oxygen to work. Check the link below for a better explanation
- no oxygen to the cells lead to cell death.
- cells need oxygen, without they die.
- Cells produce energy in the form of a molecule called adenosine triphosphate (ATP). The most efficient pathway to make ATP requires oxygen being combined with hydrogen to make water as the final step. If a cell does not have sufficient oxygen, it cannot make enough ATP to survive. Since many normal processes in a cell require energy, the housekeeping functions of the cell break down: the cell membrane loses its ability to keep certain ions in or out, proteins are not made, DNA and RNA cannot be made, etc. Eventually, the cells either die and disintegrate or commit a form of suicide called apoptosis.
