Long Term Effects of a Dead Zone? ( Gulf of Mexico )?

What are some long term effects from the Gulf of Mexico Dead Zone? Will it get larger and kill off more fish? I know that in the summer when their is heat it expands and when it's wind it gets smaller.. but I'm not sure what the long term effects are? Also the short term effects?
