Medical Conditions can stop Piloting?

Now, when I was 12 years of age, I was diagnosed with a Seizure Disorder. I began having random seizures throughout my life, and the doctors had a hard time figuring out why I had these particular seizures. It wasn't epilepsy or anything similar. The seizures were random and it did not matter where I was, what I eat, or what I was doing. On top of that, the doctors did a full x-ray and found that I have a severe heart condition where my heart, arteries, and veins are wired backwards and awkwardly throughout my body. Its amazing that I can breathe, run, and live day to day. I am now 17. I have been put on Keppra XR, a Medication to stop my seizures, and it has done well. I have not had a seizure in a long time, almost an entire year now. The only side effect of the Keppra is insomnia. I am looking forward to a career as a Helicopter/Airplane Pilot but am afraid that I will be rejected due to my seizures. Can I still become a pilot or am I screwed? Please not that I have not had a seizure since starting the Medication. Any answers will be appreciated.

  1. They worry that some day you might take off without your meds. That is why you are screwed - they always err on the side of caution.
  2. I can't say. Many folks have disorders that are under control with meds. and work at the job of their choice. BUT The possibility of a seizure may make you ineligible. Why not make an appt . to see them or write them and ask.
