Hypoxia and Medicine

could this be cancer

My son has been ill for a very long time. the sickness is intermittent and contains many different symptoms including joint swelling, severe bone pain, extreme fatigue, paleness, flu like symptoms, neck swelling and immobility, sometimes rashes and then all of a sudden he gets well and then will go down hill again and each time it presents new symptoms or gets a little worse. He is 13. Just recently about 3 weeks ago he had a lymph node pop up on his neck. it is small-unseen but very had and stationary. I took him to his doctor 3 weeks ago who told me it was nothing. Last weekend he had severe pain in his upper left abdomen region and then had white loose stools. For three years this doctor has been unable to come to a diagnosis. She has referred us to an academic hospital for pediatric rheumatology but always says it is a mystery virus. When I took him in last time for the node she stated that I had to stop taking him in for the sniffles and the nurse acted put out with dealing with us. Just the other day my son was walking across the living room stopped suddenly and gasped. His head flew back and his pupils were huge he became extremely dizzy-laid down screamed of a headache and fell fast asleep. I decided to get another doctor which we go to tomorrow. But requested and received his medical file. His blood test baffled me...anyone have any suggestions. I want to start with this new doctor a little more educated. Mystery virus is no longer acceptable. This child has been sick with flu like conditions over ten times in the past year... HGB 13.8 Low HCT 39 Low MPV 6 Low Lymph percentage 50.2 High Gran percentage 35.3 Low Glucose 123 High Alk Phos 276 High His Red blood count concerns me because it is borderline low RBC 4.61 Range 4.6-6.2 And his chloride concerns because it is borderline high Chloride 106 Range 89-107 Everything else is normal-Help

  1. Maybe the Rheumatology angle isn't that far fetched. My wife had JRA (Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis) with similar symptoms at his age. I don't know about the blood results...that's best left to a clinician to interpret. However, JRA or some auto-immune condition sounds like a possibility, with the symptoms you described.
  2. i know your desperate, but this is not the place to get that answered, even a dr would require alot more information and testing. if this dr doesnt work, go to a learning/teaching hospital. they do great. hope you have good insurance.
  3. I would take your son to a neurologist immediately. That headache is what is most worrying. His RBC is not low, it looks as if its in the normal range. He sounds like he needs an MRI of the head and abdomen. Chloride is also normal. Next, I would report that unprofessional nurse to your the doctor or head nurse, whoever her boss is. Good luck with your son.
