what is the effect of high altitude on ESR ?
at high altitudes , due to hypoxia polycythemia occurs as a result of which the ESR should decrease....but some texts mention that at high altitude ESR also increases ....!!! help ?

- You're partly correct in your understanding. Interesting stuff! :) Yes, high altitudes will cause (in many cases) polycythemia in those who are exposed to a decrease in oxygen. [You will also see this in many smokers too.] So, with a notable increase in Hgb & Hct on your lab, the increased hemoglobin will cause an increased rate in your ESR. This is likely due in part to the "heaviness" of the cells, and the increased probability for aggregation of the cells as a result. Best of luck!
