Is the "Dead Zone" in the Gulf of Mexico made worse by AGW,or is it a "hoax" or a "natural occurrence"?

There is a "Dead Zone" off the Wash. / Ore. coast also. http://www.kristy/global/story.asp?s=8718376 steve p The link will inform you as to what "dead" means. http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/wireStory?id=5431140 There's a link. Now what? wormy, If it's the levees on the river, why is there a dead zone off the Wa/Or. coasts as well? http://www.foxnews.com/wires/2006Aug11/0,4670,PacificDeadZone,00.html

  1. No it is made worse by increased agriculture for ethanol bio fuel production. So it is global warming alarmism that is contaminating the world currently with the bio fuel scam.
  2. It is made worse by nutrients from the Mississippi that are waste products not related to global warming. Because warm water is low in oxygen some would make that case but it is a very weak case. It is partially natural and made worse by our pollution that is eaten by microbes, plants, and animals.
  3. I am lost. What do you mean by "Dead Zone"? Edit: Are you sure you have the right link. I see a beautiful girl sitting on a beach with a lap top. There are links on how to take photographs. Must be an American thing. It does not explain what dead means.
  4. Jim Z is right. I think it is also thought to be due to the levees that are all along the Mississippi river. This channelizes the water and artificially increases the velocity, which in turn propels the sediments that would normally be dumped into the delta (which is starving for sediments) out into the gulf and smothering everything. Also, I could not get your link to work.
  5. Your link doesn't work.
  6. The Dead Zone is real, and man-made, but has little if anything to do with AGW. It is primarily the result of agriculture and inadequate water treatment. On a somewhat related note, the Missisippi river is being unnaturally held to it's current coarse. Rivers naturally wander over time, as they fill in with sediment they find more direct routes. Our response has to build bigger and bigger levees and dams, rather than plan for the new route. This is partly responsible for the destruction following Katrina. I didn't say the levees were responsible for the dead zone, that was another answerer before me. I was saying the levees are responsible for flooding. Sorry if I was not clear.
  7. Nope, the Gulf is a victim of the hoax. http://www.news.wisc.edu/14875
  8. I'm not sure how it's related to AGW, other than that they are both symptoms of a larger problem. There are dead zones around the world, where ever rivers empty into lakes, seas and oceans. The more developed the watershed, the worse the problem. They are growing in number and size. When the oceans die and the fish are gone, maybe that will get peoples attention. Hey people, it's happening now.
