Please recommend books by Stephen King that are like The Dead Zone?
And NOT too horror like Misery or that movie I saw called The Mist? I only read The Dead Zone because I like the TV show--I never read King before. Not a fan of horror-blood and guts-Friday the 13th, etc. I do like Hitchcock and Agatha Christie. Thanks! Live well and do good.

- Give these a try Duma Key Firestarter Both of these have elements of the supernatural in them but they do not have a lot of gore. Duma Key is about a man who takes up painting to deal with the loss of an arm. What he paints, well it's anything but normal. Firestarter is about a girl who possesses the power to set fire with thought. A government agency wants her so they can use her(typical crooked government goons). The girl only has her father and the story centers around their run from these goons. Not a lot of gore in either of these books but there is violence, after all we're talking about Stephen King here. Good luck!
- Some of his best works are found in his shorter novels. The collection 'Different Seasons' has 'Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption', 'The Body' (filmed as 'Stand By Me'), "Apt Pupil' and 'The Breathing Method'. 'Four Past Midnight' has 'The Langoliers', 'Secret Window, Secret Garden', 'The Library Policeman' and 'The Sun Dog'. 'Hearts In Atlantis', 'Blaze', 'Dolores Claiborne' and 'The Stand' are also excellent.
- "Firestarter" is very much like "Dead Zone." "The Stand" is quite long, but is probably his best book, and there's little gore or monsters there.
- I loved the Library Policeman. No gore in that, just a bit spooky. I enjoyed Duma Key, although it is pretty long. The Green Mile was great. The only story of his that scared me was 1408 in Everything is Eventual. The movie was nothing like the book.
- His non-horror books have nothing wrong with them. They dont have any gore or anything and are INCREDIBLE novels. Try: Hearts In Atlantis Bag of Bones The Green Mile Another would be Rose Madder, but I wasnt a huge fan of that one. Most people do like it though. Many people also like The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, but it just didnt do anything for me.
