Hypoxia kitten? Any information and Tips??
euter surgery) and he is much better than he was a few days ago. He is eating a little and drinking a little. When I let him up to walk he kind of stumbles and walks until he runs into stuff. I really don't know what to do and could anybody tell me what to do to help him? He doesn't use the rest room on his own or anything and I want to know any way to make him more comfortable. What bad signs to look for? What are the normal actions of a cat recovering from hypoxia. I have already taken him to the vet 3 times and he was seen by the second time by a doctor who told me he had hypoxia and he was recovering from it. He went in to get neutered and his heart stopped during the surgery. Then he stopped breathing and They said that he was without oxygen just long enough for them to put the tube in which was at the most 5 minutes. He was a healthy and wonderful kitten up until this

- I'm thinking that there is more to this story than what you have here. How did the kitten get hypoxic? This means that he had too low a level of oxygen for some time. This can certainly cause some brain issues. What was the original problem? If the kitten has some neurologic deficits as a result of hypoxia, they may not improve. But without knowing the original situation, it is hard to give advice. I'm sorry about your kitten, whatever the cause!
- Hypoxia is the medical term for a shortage of oxygen in the body. Recovery is possible if the brain has not been deprived of oxygen for too long. What did you take your kitten in for and I would have a chat with the vet about why your kitten was deprived of oxygen if surgery was performed. Usually it is when the cat is put under for surgery it gets too much anesthesia. I would keep your cat confined so it doesn't hurt himself - a child's playpen would be a thought - put blankets down so he can be comfortable. Please talk this situation over with the vet staff and how you should proceed with your kitten - it sounds like they should be seeing your cat for free in my opinion if surgery was involved.
- Your poor kitty! Hypoxia is a common cause of cerebral palsy, Cerebral Palsy is brain damage. The brain can not repair damage once it has been done. However, the animal can be taught to work around the disability. If there is any hope for your kitty you should should see marked improvement within the first 72 hours. If your kitty has not improved or has gotten worse the damage to his brain is likely to bad for him to be able to re-learn the basic skills he has lost. Hypoxia also causes blindness in cats. Are your kitties pupils very large and non responsive to light? The easiest way to check for blindness in a cat is with a laser pointer as they can "follow" the noise and smells of objects. Run the laser back and forth on the floor in front of your kitty and see if he responds. If your kitty is blind with a little help from you he will learn to adjust to your home. In fact, many owners do no realize that their cats can't see because they adapt so well to their environment. His only real limitation would be that he should not go outside if he is blind because he can't defend him self.
