How much does a low venous oxygen saturation affect judgement? When brought to the ER with liquid in her lungs (pleural effusion as a result of terminal metastatic breast cancer) my late wife's venous oxygen saturation was measured as 46% (as recorded on hospital file). Just then, in my absence, a relative got her to sign a will and now claims it's valid. Less than two days later she died, but had time to tell me that she shouldn't have signed anything when she was feeling so 'agitated'. I calmed her, telling her I would take care of it, and not to worry. Does anyone out there have the medical know-how to tell me whether I am well founded in contesting the will, and that its worthwhile (despite my state of bereavement) to start looking for lawyers and expert witnesses? A note for "biomed": You may have jumped to conclusions - as father of our infant daughter, I have to make sure that her mother's bequethment to her is protected. As much as I would just like to say 'to hell with this head-ache', I am motivated by parental responsiblity, rather than greed, to find a just solution.
Blood Oxygen Saturation level - what is the fatal and normal range? Blood Oxygen Saturation level - what is the fatal and normal range? How long is a sub 85% level sustainable without more than a simple mask? This is about my son. He is on hospice care, and is terminal. He is 1 year old, 9 pounds 8 ounces. This is a good weight for him due to proportion. He has a disease called rhizomelic chondrodysplasia punctata. He almost passed in july and barely beat an rsv infection that weakened him significantly. He is on a nasal cannula @ 1l. His oxygen sat level is now in in the high 80s with the 1l nasal cannula delivery. It drops to low 80s or worse at times when he cries or strains, or even urinates. Before these recent episodes he was in the low 90s with no oxygen. We have also put him on a feeding pump, which works with ng tube, to spread out his feeds and avoid fluid shock to his sytem. We will no hospitalize him. He was on oxygen only supplemental until 4 days ago when he had some respiratory episodes and needed to go back on oxygen permanently. I'm trying to get a realistic picture from someone who is no bias.
What blood oxygen saturation is normal? Now for some reason this question was deleted before because i asked "what O2 sat would someone pass out at" and i honestly asked it in the most medical meaning possible. My grandmother is currently dying of pulmonary anemia and her oxygen level is somewhere between 75 and 85. My question is what happens at different O2 sats. What level is normal, what causes confusion, fainting, coma, and death... I honestly hope this question wont be deleted, because i feel that i have done nothing wrong in posting it, i am just wondering about anatomy.
Can low oxygen saturation be reversed? I've started using an oxygen concentrator during sleep. I'm only a few weeks into not smoking, and if I'm successful in never smoking again, can this low oxygen reverse itself? After 30 years of smoking I'm betting the damage is not reversible, but just checking anyway. The oxygen level drop was in the low 80s. Wondering if this problem has been going on for several years, could this be contributing to the worsening of my anger, edginess, short fuse, strange thinking, etc, over the years?
Oxygen saturation low after bowel surgery? My dad had some of his bowel removed on Saturday due to a tear in it and now has a temp colsosc. bag. His oxygen sat level is really low and he is having troubles with the breathing. Any ideas what causes this?
Role of oxygen in saturation diving decompression? I have heard that using oxygen to flush nitrogen from the body prior to ascent at the end of a saturation dive can reduce the length of decompression time. 1. What is this technique called? 2. What source is considered the definitive authority on this technique? 3. Do any of you have personal experience with this technique?
causes for low oxygen saturation level? What exactly cause low oxygen saturation? and why is surgery unable to continue until levels are back to normal? does having diabetes have anything to do with LOS levels?
oxygen saturation of pregnant woman with pneumonia? what do you think of a 40 year old pregnant woman in a hospital with pneumonia, that is complaining of shortness of breath with a oxygen saturation of .89 and when her doctor is reached by phone gives a order to not call him to leave the woman be? Does anyone see anything wrong with this picture, and where can a health care worker complain of this
Oxygen saturation drops with exercise? I've been dealing with a lot of breathing problems for several years. In some recent tests we've found that my oxygen saturation levels are dropping from a resting level of 98%-99% to 85% or lower with exercise. What are some things that could cause this? I do not have asthma, allergies, sleep apnea, a cardiac shunt, blood clots, vocal chord dysfunction, or any pulmonary function problems. I am in great shape. I'm a runner and cross country ski racer, I train an average of 13 hours a week. My blood pressure is low and my resting heartrate is around 53bmp My hemoglobin and hematocrit levels are 17gm/dl and 46%47%. I DO have severe acid reflux and a torn esophageal sphincter.
low oxygen saturation levels? I just found out I have sleep apnea. I am fine with that but the doctors are concerned that my oxygen saturation levels dropped to 60 most of the night without the CPAP and 90 with it. Is it normal to have your oxygen levels down that low when you sleep?
Asthma, oxygen saturation reading off? Also question about Xopenex (and nebulizer treatments in general).? Hi, I've been having some pretty bad asthma symptoms lately (bad enough where I went into the hospital last night). I was put on Prednisone 40 mg 2X daily. Anyway, my oxygen saturation was fine, and I'm wondering if my over-compensating breathing (i.e. I was trying to make up for my shallow breaths by taking more and taking them as deeply as possible, even though my chest was sore) would have highered it, when, if I had just let myself breathe without physically straining during the attack, it would have let my oxygen levels drop lower? There have also been times when I have a bad attack and my oxygen is close to normal, whereas a mild one is much lower. Could this be caused by my rapid breathing (in a desperate attempt to get more air in)? Lastly, can Xopenex nebulizer treatments cause high blood pressure temporarily (like 120/85)? I'm usually 90/60, but last night my BP was high. Thanks so much!
Oxygen saturation of 81? we took some little test at school that clicks onto your finger and tells you oxygen saturation and heart rate. My heart rate came out normal- 72, but my o2 sat came out 81%, I looked it up and thats considered severly low. Is the test probably wrong? Because wouldn't I have symptoms if it was that low? My friend thinks it could be the cause of my chronic nausea, but I think the test is wrong.
Oxygen saturation vs Blood Pressure!? Can someone explain why the blood pressure goes down when the oxygen saturation is great. Also when the saturation is poor, the blood pressure is normal. Does this have anything to do with cardiac output or optimal peep?
sats (% oxygen saturation)? Hey, im a 16yr old girl and i have a traineeship at a hospital so i did my sats (percentage oxygen saturation) and it was 86% so i waited and did it a bit later and it was about 95% i did it several other times later that day each other times it was in the mid 90s is this bad?
Is low oxygen saturation causing this? I've been having alot of trouble with wheezing and a cough that won't go away for over 2 months now...i'm 21, and i went to the university doctor. They think its my asthma but my singular, advair and albuterol haven't really cleared it up. When i was at the doctors they checked my oxygen saturation and found it was only 85 percent...its not supposed to be lower than 95 percent, and for about a week now the top layer or two of skin has been peeling off my finger tips......is there anyyy chance this could be related to poor oxygen saturation over a prolonged period of time?.....I don't have really dry skin or anyting..and i've been using lotion too....
Normal oxygen saturation level(s)? Hi, went to the ER because there was a spot on my tonsil that had looked like it may have been bleeding. I'm okay. We just went there because we it didn't look right, and we didn't really want to wait till later in the week (Which we would of had to) and thankfully went there. I was close to developing strep. But i just wanted to know, I saw that my Oxygen sat. was 96% at triage, and later when waiting I decided to put on the pulsox thing back on my finger and saw it go back between 97 and 98. But 96% would be considered normal right? Also what are some causes of lower oxygen saturation? I know I'm fine just wanting to know :) very interested in medical science. Can something as simple and insignificant as phlegm in the airways (from airborne seasonal allergies) cause a little bit of lowering? Thanks.
Oxygen saturation levels drop while sleeping, what is this called? I do not have any interruptions in my breathing. No pauses, no snoring. However, my oxygen sat levels drop down to 80 soon as I fall asleep. This sounds similar to Sleep Apnea, but as I have no interruptions in breathing (no stops), it is not that. Anyone have an idea what the name of this might be? I am 24, Never smoked in my life. p.s. I am going back for second sleep study and all, but my doctor didn't give me any sort of name or idea of WHAT this could be, the cause of the lessened saturation during sleep, and wanted to have help to find more information before the second study so I am not as freaked out about this. Thank you all for the help. ~Also have type two diabetes, hypothyroidism, high blood pressure, year round allergies, and yes I am obese. (I have been trying to lose weight my whole life, please don't harp on it.) Thank you everyone again! I have been overweight my whole life, but the sleep issue is NEW. So it is not directly related to my weight. Thank you all.
Blood Oxygen Saturation? I'm an asthmatic yet for some reason I can get to the stage where I'm non-responsive to voice or general awareness of what's going on around me almost to the point of blacking out whilst having a Blood Oxygen Saturation of 96% At this stage I can hardly get any air in my lungs and in some cases have ended up on Bi-Pap. What would cause my levels to stay high but still get very little air into my lungs? Reason I ask is that some hospitals realize straight away that I'm not ok where others read my levels and tell me I'm fine send me home and I end up back in an I.C.U ward that same day.
What does oxygen saturation signify? I've had it measured a few times lately, what exactly does it mean? mines usually 98 - 99%, which is ok ok, out of interest, how is it measured, and in what sense is the oxygen "in the blood" because theres other stuff in the blood too, or am I just being stupid lol
question about oxygen saturation levels in infant? we took my 2mo old to cardiologist today. she tetralogy of fallot with complete av canal malformation. 2 weeks ago he said she had mild chf and started her on lasix. last week her o2 levels were at 94%. today they were at 86% and said that was good because that means her chf is improving. this confuses me and i didnt think to ask about it. thanks
I have a very low oxygen saturation level. Lows around 70% to high of 88%. What are some possible causes? In the last four months, I've had a Ct scan, Hide-a-Scan, two heart studies, three halter monitors, sleep study,Sonogram, full body bone scan, endoscopy and complete blood work up. My cholesterol was slightly above normal. The sleep study showed I have sleep apnea. ( I now wear a C-Pap @ 17 psi w/ 5 lpm o2). The endoscopy showed some signs of mild damage due to aspirin and tylenol taken for the pain. The CT scan showed mild degeneration of L1 & L2 but otherwise nothing significant. (History of prostate cancer. Dr thought maybe the cancer had metastasized into the spine but bone scan showed no evidence of cancer) Moderate to severe pain in RUQ was diagnosed as costal condritis. Symptoms of this are improving. Bone chilling fatigue haunts me. I'm fairly certain that this is a direct result of the low o2 sats. Any ideas? So far, the doctors have not found out the problem. Thanks!
How can I sleep on oxygen therapy? My dr just put me on oxygen therapy at night because my oxygen saturation levels were dropping to about 82% at night (according to a sleep study). They brought the concentrator out Monday and I'm supposed to sleep with it on.....but, I can't sleep with it on. The last 2 nights I have lain there awake for 2 hours and finally had to turn it off so I could get any sleep at all. It kind of makes me feel funny....maybe it's just anxiety but it feels like my heart is doing flip flops/palpitations in my chest. I can doze off for a second and then awake in a panic with my heart racing. Plus, it's loud but I can't put it in the hall because we have dogs and cats in & out & I'm afraid one of them would chew up the tubing. And, I don't like anything on my face. Does anyone have any suggestions? Are there any possible negative side effects to using oxygen? I think I'm only on 2 lpm, that's not much is it? I think I'm just nervous about it.....can anyone put my mind at ease? Thanks.
Oxygen Saturation Levels? Can someone please tell me where I can find a chart, or just anything, that tells me what the O2 sat. levels should be for the DIFFERENT HEART CHAMBERS, as well as pulmonary artery/vein and aorta? Thank you!
What can happen to a 94-year-old man who is oxygen deprived? My elderly father was in a rehab facility recovering from pneumnia, gaining strength reaching his physical activity goal, and a week from coming home. He was suppose to be on 2L oxygen at all times to keep his saturation at a minimum of 92%. This particular day he was left with an empty tank for a few hours. His oxygen saturation had dropped to 86%. We got a new tank going andI thought everything would be fine. 12 hours later the facility called and said his oxygen level had dropped to 84% and he was being rushed to the ER. There I was told his organs were shutting down (I recall them mentioning liver, pancreas, and kidneys) and he was not going to make it. He died 24 hours later. Even though my father was not in the best of health, I believe he was neglected, and his death was pushed forward because the facility left him without oxygen for a few hours.
Breathing problems. Is it possible to keep oxygen saturation in the flat equally high as outside? I sometimes have problems getting 100% oxygen from breathing. It is because my nose has reduced inhailing capability, it was broken as i was a kid... I see now, that if i go outside this problem virtually doesn't exist, but in my flat i get tired easely, and fell asleep sometimes. Normal ways like ventilation don't work that well and in the winter are rather impossible. Are there ways, special air conditioners or something medical, which can increase the oxygen level or regularely "pump" the fresh air from outside?? it is not about "my particular flat", it is in any flat . I.e. if many people are in the room without open windows i might fall asleep or experience blackout:(
Ok. I am now using a oxygen machine for the first time due to low oxygen saturation? anyways, I usually have high blood pressure, and am tired and groggy all the time. Well today was daylight savings and I had to get up early for church and I have felt beautiful and awake all day. I went and checked my blood pressure at a pharmacy and it was 106/75, and my pulse was like 78, it's usually really high. My bp is usually at least 135/90 to 100, is this from one evening of having oxygen? I am just amazed if so. Let me know what you think.
At what point do doctors develop their superiority complex? Case in point: I took my 4 year old son to the Rapid Care clinic to have a doctor listen to his lungs, and to get a chest X-ray. He has very early pneumonia( diagnosed by our GP) and was given 2 broad spectrum anitbiotics as well as high doses of both Ventolin and Flovent. I was not happy with his progress, so I decided to check it out.( I would have taken him back to our family doctor, but he is now away on conference). After waiting for a couple of hours, the ER doctor proceeded to tell me that he has asthma and a runny nose- Post Nasal Drip to be exact. He never bothered to check on my son's stats when he entered triage, could not recall what his Oxygen Saturation and BP were, and spent most of the time Pooh-poohing me out the door. Now, unlike most people, I will not tolerate any medical professional speaking to me in a condescending manner, it really offends me. What I would like to know, is when do doctors develop their " God" complexes? Sungirlie, Is it possible that he has seen this type of problem before-- kids with pneumonia? Sure he has; however, in my son's case, it is a little different. My son is a carrier of the Cystic Fibrosis gene, which means that although he does not suffer the symptoms of CF to its fullest degree, he does have all the complications that come with it. This is his third round of pneumonia in the last 12 months, and simply going to the paeditrician is not suffice. As far as having my sons' growing up and saving lives, I teach them to be compassionate and respectful of others, and it is that quality that would make them great doctors, not anything else.
Oxygen Level For a Toddler? My nephew just went to the doc. His Oxygen Saturation was 83%. They are addmiting him into the hospital. What are they going to do to treat him! What is a normal oxygen saturation for a 2 year old boy?
Lack of Oxygen at birth, what is the likely outcome? (symptoms below)? My son was born by crash c-section 2 days ago. When he was born he had no heartbeat but had an apgar of 1 after 5mins then 6 after 10mins. When he left the theatre his heart rate was normal at 140bpm. He is on intensive care, but has been breathing for himself since day one, and all other obs (blood pressure, oxygen saturation etc are all normal) He has had two fits involving limb shaking and mouth movements as well as desat. They have mentioned cerebral irritation, and has had a 3rd dose of phenobarb today after the 2nd fit. After this he has slept peacefully most of the day. Can anyone suggest the likelyhood of a full recovery and possible future problems (I'm guessing his life is now safe) the doctors are very cautious and refuse to look past the day ahead. We live in the UK.
Oxygen Levels? Is an oxygen saturation that reaches 80% in need of going to the hospital. My father has COPD and his O2 has been reading at 84 or lower. What does this mean?
Oxygen Level For a Toddler? My nephew just went to the doc. His Oxygen Saturation was 83%. They are addmiting him into the hospital. What are they going to do to treat him! What is a normal oxygen saturation for a 2 year old boy? He has very bad asthema and allergies. Is there a point when your oxygen level is so low that it is dangerous?
What are the units of measurement for water tests? gayyy science fair stuff. anways yea. what are the units of measure for: nitrates pH dissolved oxygen yep. oxygen saturation is just a percentage.. nothing else? please help. :/ yea like temperature is in degrees- celsius or fairenheit... what are the measurements called for these? all I have is numbers.
Select the correct statement about oxygen transport in blood:? 1) during normal activity, a molecule of hemoglobin returning to the lungs contains one molecule of O2 2) during conditions of acidosis, hemoglobin is able to carry oxygen more efficiently 3) increased BPG levels in the red blood cells enhance oxygen-carrying capacity 4) a 50% oxygen saturation level of blood returning to the lungs might indicate an activity level higher than normal
COPD, what will 02 saturation be at sea level? my husband has COPD. his o2 saturation is between 87% - 89% at night without his oxygen. we live in colorado (alt 5000 ft). we are traveling to sea level. will he still need to sleep with oxygen? i am looking for people who have COPD, and have experience with altitude changes.
How do you find the amount of oxygen released to muscles in physiology? Assume that at rest the avg blood flow to the skeletal muscle is 100 ml/min with about 20 ml of oxygen per 100 ml of arterial blood (at sea level). What about at maximum exercise or at high elevation? How to calculate this isn't making any sense to me and I've found no help anywhere else. I know you need to use a hemoglobin oxygen saturation curve, but I'm not sure how to read it. Only helpful suggestions--no criticism, please!
What do you cal this medical instrument? I was wondering what do you call the instrument that the nurse uses at the hospital, plastic thing that clamps your finger with a red light inside that checks your level of blood oxygen saturation
Can someone help me with these bilogy questions? Describe 3 real life of any situations where the parameters like Hb-Oxygen saturation, carbon dioxide levels, pH, and myoglobin levels in blood are measured Will hyperventilation raise or lower blood pO2? blood pCO2? blood pH? Why? Will emphysema raise or lower blood pO2? blood pCO2? blood pH? Why?
Is oxygen, by itself, combustible? Without a catalyst, is gaseous oxygen with 100% saturation combustible? Can someone please provide a source of their answer also? Thanks
What is all this medical jargon and what does it mean?!? When I was in hospital these were my stats.. I got these from my medical record and was wondering if someone could help me interpret what they mean and what the abbreviations stand for.. -My GCS (glasgow coma scale) was 3 -oxygen saturation 76% -borderline prolong QT interval -co2 levels 38 -Had a ng tube -ventilated -had an ambu bag -temp 34 degrees what does all this indicate or mean?!? Thanks :)
How do you know if doctors are doing enough for your child if there is so much information for them to review? My daughter's lung collapsed at birth and after three weeks was released from the NICU with no medications or machines. She was sounding very congested and her Dr. finally referred her to an ENT. That Dr. found that her adnoids were growing down into her throat which caused apnea. She is too young for surgery but her apnea monitor sounds often. A sleep study has confirmed that her saturation (blood oxygen) dropped below 70 % at times and put her on oxygen at home when she sleeps which is quite the challenge. Since then she has also been diagnosed with PDA and ASD Heart diseases; Anemia (even with iron suppliments); high platelet count; pulmonary hypertension. I'm at my witts end! I feel that I'm seeing all these different doctors and no one is putting the information together. They are all puzzled at how healthy she looks to have all of these things wrong. Is anyone in a simular situation or could shed some light on what could be going on? She is so precious. God bless!
Oxygen dissolved? I have a short question concerning the Henry's law: e^(pO2) = e^(kc) In the above equation, does the C (dissolved oxygen) given at the equilibrium? Is there any O2 saturation in water and how can I compute it. My concern is that I want to know the dissolved O2 in water but up to saturation, I don't want to be over saturated. Does the above equation give the dissolved oxgen at equilibrium or saturation? If equilibrium, how can I compute at saturation? Thanks
Biology/medical help? Raymond Harrison, a 64-year-old male was admitted to the hospital with fever, shaking chills, a nonproductive cough, and chest pain for six days. A chest x-ray revealed extensive accumulation of fluid in both lungs. The patient had mild hypertension and a275 pack/year smoking history. The patient’s heart rate was elevated at 100 beats per minute. An arterial blood gas test was performed and the oxygen saturation of the arterial blood was 72% (normal would be 94–100%). The blood test revealed an elevated How does the abnormal oxygen saturation value relate to the patient’s elevated heart rate? If you had to choose between emphysema and chronic bronchitis as your diagnosis, which would you choose and what evidence did you use to make this choice? Explain why doctors are using antibiotics and bronchodilators to treat this patient?

"Pulse-ox" reading inaccurate? Hi, I've been having some pretty bad asthma symptoms lately (bad enough where I went into the hospital last night). I was put on Prednisone 40 mg 2X daily. Anyway, my oxygen saturation was fine, and I'm wondering if my over-compensating breathing (i.e. I was trying to make up for my shallow breaths by taking more and taking them as deeply as possible, even though my chest was sore) would have highered it, when, if I had just let myself breathe without physically straining during the attack, would it have made my oxygen levels drop lower? There have also been times when I have a bad attack and my oxygen is close to normal, whereas with a mild one, the reading is much lower. Could this be caused by my rapid breathing (in a desperate attempt to get more air in)? Thanks! Would the nail polish, poor circulation, and cold hands cause a LOWER reading than normal, or a higher reading? (If you don't mind, can you hit the "edit" on your answer and add that in please? I don't think you can reply to a question twice. :) Thank you so much!) Oh my gosh! That could explain why it read normal ... I'm very anemic (Ferritin was 7 I believe). Thank you so much!
