Is it healthy to live at high altitudes? I've heard that your health increases if you live in the mountains because your heart and lungs have to increase in strength to get enough oxygen. And also that olympic altheletes train at high altitudes to help build up their strength. But what kind of health benefits could one get from living high above sea level?
Is there a link between high altitudes and longevity? There is a proven link between longevity and colder climates, like Iceland, however, is there also a link between high altitudes and longevity? I know high altitudes also have cold climates in some cases, however, does altitude have an effect of it's own?
How long to soak beans for high altitudes? I want to make beans.. I live at an elevation of 6420 feet and I know high altitude cooking is much different then at sea level and cooking beans is one of the hardest things to cook at high altitudes. So I have been told to soak my beans overnight in warm salt water, and then I have been told to soak them for just about 6hrs in unsalted water. I do not have a pressure cooker so I wont be using one! Soak overnight or just a few hours? Thanks!!
Why is there less oxygene in high altitudes? I'm doing a 3 minute oral on "Why there is less oxygen in high altitudes" and I need to find some explanations. The one I found is that gravity is weaker up there and so gases, including oxygen, are more dispersed thus we have a hard time breathing when climbing high mountains etc. Now I need 1 or 2 more explanations to make my 3 minutes on stage. Thx.
Why is it necessary for airplanes to fly at such high altitudes? Commercial airplane Jets (i.e Boeings, Airbus') fly at altitudes of 30,000-40,000 feet during the course of their flight. I never have understood why it was necessary to do so. Why can't they fly at 4,000 feet or so? Wouldn't it be easier for a pilot to maneuver a more safe landing in the case of an emergency if the airplane was not so high in the air?
Am I able to climb high altitudes whilst suffering from anaemia and or asthma? I am due to climb Mount Kilimanjaro this year but a travel co have informed me that climbing high altitudes with anaemia is not advised. I have been anaemic for a few years and take iron supplements, I also have slight asthma however in certain weather conditions it increases. Can someone let me know their thoughts, if it is safe to climb this high with these conditions? Thanks .
Why do lungs expand at high altitudes? I did something for science about the dangers of high altitudes such as lungs expanding too much and collapsing/exploding because of too much expansion. What is the reason for the expansion though?
Baking chocolate chip cookies in very high altitudes? I am currently in the western tip of Austria right now, and the altitudes are pretty high... Im not sure exactly, and i couldnt find out on the internet. I was wondering if anybody had a recipe that I could use? It would also be great if it was in celsius and the measurments were in metric :) Thanks!
Can angina be affected by high altitudes? A person we know is in her late 70's and has mild angina. She is due to travel to the top of a mountain some 3000ft +. Will the thinner air and high altitudes affect her angina?
Can oxygen be used in high altitudes to reduce a sickle cell crisis? I asked this once before with no response. For a person with sickle cell, since their bodies red blood don't store oxygen well and they can pass out at high altitude, would it then make sense that use of oxygen could prevent this? I'm thinking starting out at a high rate then gradually lowering it while the body adapts to the higher altitude.
Why does it take water longer to boil at high altitudes than low altitudes? If there is high altitude, then pressure is lower, and since pressure is directly proportional to temperature, water would boil at a lower temperature. Wouldn't that make it easier/faster to boil water if it boils at a lower temperature? Also since pressure is lower, there is not as much force holding water molecules together, so it would be easier to separate them into gas. I would really appreciate it if someone could explain this to me.
How do high altitudes affect the supercharger on a 99 Grand Prix? I have a 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP. I'm moving from Pensacola, FL to Denver, CO. How will the higher altitudes affect my supercharger? Also, I have a Thrasher cold air system on it which already causes me some boost loss. Should I take it off before I go? also, if you happen to know: I was told that there is some difference in the gas composition there... is that true? If so, what can I expect to have to modify to make my car run right? Thanks to everyone in advance!
is it OK to drive to high altitudes while 7-8 weeks pregnant ? Could anybody shed some light on this please? My husband and I are flying to maui this weekend we are planning to drive to high attitudes, maui highest altitude is 10,223 feet high, I am 6 weeks pregnant could this harm the fetus. Thanks koolrunning
Why the climate is cool in high altitudes despite we are nearer to Sun's heat? The higher the altitude, the cooler the climate. As we fly above 30 thousand feet, we are nearer to sun by 30 thousand feet. The earth is scotched with Sun's heat. But the same sun is note effective in scotching the flight even though it goes near the Sun. The Rocket should melt, but does not. The mountains which are nearer to sun by a few thousand feet, but they are cool. Why this contoversy ?
Can jet airliner doors be opened at high altitudes? I thought they opened inward and at high altitude it is not possible to open one because the cabin pressure is greater than the outside air pressure, but a CSI episode shows passengers fearing for their lives because someone was trying to open the door in flight. If they open inwards then there is no way someone has enough strength to pull the door inwards first.
The mystery of how rain is formed into mass by falling from high altitudes and will create an electric mass? Water is drawn by evaporation and rises to the highest altitude possible . Where there are different altitude pressures like mountains or low plains changes heat extraction from water as this is why there is snow and water .Evaporated water falling at a certain speed and depth will create mass cloud but dictated by wind pressure created by the turning of the planet .Water also carrys minerals and as evaporated water falls ( just imaged two flint rocks clashing and sparking)molecules clash and bounce off each other with a combination of the earths magnetic field thus creating lightning .All the mineral in sea water comes from the earth and from volcanic activity this is why in fish there is high amount of volcanic mineral in fish(mineral plays a part in everything). The only reason the clouds stay up is because the world is turning and altitude pressure.Whats your veiw on this topic .Answers appreciated .Einstien the stars, science and belief? Now you all know Thors hammer was made of minerals .
What happens to people at high altitudes? Suppose there is a future society wherein people live in a floating city in the sky. Is this possible? Would they freeze to death? Would the air be too thin to breathe? How high in the sky is it possible to still survive? Can plants grow? Will birds thrive?
Hemoglobin affinity for O2 at high altitudes? I am reading two conflicting answers: 1. At high altitudes, HB has adapted to have increased affinity for O2, in order to pick up more O2 from the lungs in a hypoxic environment; therefore the curve shifts to the LEFT. 2. At high altitudes, increased production of BPG reduces Hb's affinity for O2, maximizing delivery of O2 to tissues; therefore the curve shifts to the RIGHT. Which one of these is correct? I am confused!
Will marijuana have an effect on my body's reaction to high altitudes? so me and my buddies are going down to ecuador over the summer and it is a really long flight down there, so Im figuring that i'll bring some weed brownies to make the flight seem somewhat shorter. We are going to be up in the mountainous regions of ecuador where the elevation is really high. Will eating these have an effect on how my body reacts to altitude since I wont be smoking it? (and also, what about dip?)

how do i avoid getting sick going up high altitudes? so, to go to school i have to drive up this mountain that's about a mile high. Everytime I go up or down it I get incredibly sick. I don't usually get car sick anywhere else--it's on this certain hill because there are all this switchbacks that sway the car and we drop/gain hundreds of feet. How flying at high altitudes possible? I read that passenger aircrafts fly at about 35000feet in order to avoid drag and save fuel. But in that much altitude how could they maintain the optimum pressure and temperature inside the aircraft?
Is it safe to take a newborn in and out of high altitudes? My cousin lives in Colorado Springs and Just had a healthy baby on Thursday. She is from Indiana and wants to come home the beginning of March with the baby for a few weeks then head back to Colorado. She is worried that it isn't safe to take him in and out of the altitude. He had to be on and off oxygen for the first day and a half of life and the nurses told her it was because of the altitude. Anyone have any facts or similar situations you can share with me? Outcomes?
How long does it take you to adjust to high altitudes? For me, from my experiences going hiking and wilderness camping in the Sierra Mountains on the California/Nevada border, it takes a day or sometimes more for me to adjust. Anything over 5000 ft. or so, and my joints ache, I'm out of breath, my fingers and toes get puffy, and when sleeping I have vivid and unpleasant dreams. However, after I adjust, the symptoms go away completely - almost always within 48 hours. Does anyone else have experience with this? How long does it take you to adjust? .
Re:parachute Q : Why is it a commonly held belief that planes plummet to the ground from high altitudes? If people had parachutes they wouldn't perish from the plummet. Just kidding on the second part. I know that I should get my poetic license suspended for taking that many alliterative liberties with the language. Clearly I need to work on my writing skills. I know that airplanes don't fall out of the clear blue sky. I know that the few air crashes that do occur usually occur within a few minutes of take offs or attempted landings . I know that parachutes are completely useless in these situations. I know that I have flown over 200K w/ UAL alone What I don't know and I'm trying to get an answer for is why the perception of airplanes falling tens of thousands of feet is so firmly ingrained in the minds of the general public. Every time that somebody asks the Why a life preserver but not a parachute question. There are many answers that start with "Yeah why not ? If I was in a plane falling from 35000' I think that the airlines should give me a means to save myself Why aren't they ? " oops . I'm just asking the people that fly for a living and aviation professionals why do you think the public thinks this way, that's all

Is it easier or harder to get drunk at high altitudes? I am in a city at 2700m abouve sea level and was wondering if it easier or harder to get drunk at this altitude. I drank a fair amount last night (although I´m not sure how much as the pub wasn´t measuring the spirits, but they were at least doubles each glass), and I didn´t feel too drunk. I know I should be able to work out the physics of alcohol disolving in your blood a altitude ect but between me and my friends we could jusify both arguements. Which is right? Ok, so it´s easier, but why?
Why do ailiners have to fly at such (relatively) high altitudes? Why not fly at say, 1000ft? wouldnt have to pressurize cabins and all that, and save fuel, and faster journeys too Also, when pilots land 777s and similar in really bad weather, does it take total concentration for them to land, or is it like 2nd nature for them?
Are there any side effects from taking celebrex with high altitudes? In 2 days I am flying to Spain. I am taking prescription Celebrex (200 mg) for costocondritis. One of my friends was told her prescription can cause blood clots at high altitudes so she has to move around every 3 hours. I was just wondering if there were any similar issues with Celebrex. Thanks!

Can high altitudes effect menstrual cycle? My gf is in cali and in an area where the altitude is high and she should have started her cycle this week but didnt yet i'm worried that she might be pregnant...Can the fact that shes in an area where the altitude is high b the reason that she has not started her cycle.
Does anyone know if high altitudes can cause your period to come early? I have been charting my temperature during my last 2 cycles because we're trying to get pregnant. From what I've learned, the luteal phase (ovulation to period) should stay pretty consistant from cycle to cycle, and the follicular phase (period to ovulation) is the one that will change when stressed or ill, etc. My last luteal phase was 12 days and this month I went up to the mountains and the day I got there I spotted and the next day my period started and my temp dropped, making this luteal phase only 9 days! I also have an ovarian endometrioma cyst that I am going to have removed and I wondered if that could affect my luteal phase since it was shown by ultrasound that I ovulated on that side this month. Thanks in advance for your help and I will ask my doctor when I have my appointment in March.
Does LASIK limit you're ability to climb to high altitudes? I'm a weekend warrior type of mountaineer, but if I ever decide to get serious and I get LASIK eye surgery would I be able to go to extreme altitudes? It's been reported that you can experience blindness due to high altitudes, Beck Weathers is a famous example.
Effects of Supersonic speed by Passing Jets on wildlife...sonic boom occurs at low and high altitudes? Canadian Forces jets flying from Cold Lake, Alberta are restricted from flying at supersonic speeds over certain areas. Discuss the possible effects on wildlife subjected to regular supersonic air traffic. Explain why high altitude supersonic flights affect a greater area but have a diminished impact. I need this by tomorrow, this question will be on my physics test on Sound and Waves. Thank you. The altitude of the sonic boom is not very important. I need to know the EFFECTS of a supersonic jet and its sonic boom on wildlife that it is flying above of.
