Oxygen Saturation Monitor Knowledge Base

Why is it important to monitor oxygen saturation of the blood during surgery? Why is an oximeter important? Can it be measured without a pulse oximeter (as in, a different type of oximeter, if one exists) and how?
thinking of buying oxygen saturation monitor? I am thinking of buying an oxygen saturation monitor and wonderd if this is a good idea. I have asthma and respiratory failure caused by scoliosis. I use a ventilator at night. Sometimes when I go out I woudl like to know how low my oxygen has dropped or if I don't feel well would like to know if the oxygen saturation level dropping is the cause. There are some on Amazon ranging from £20 upwards, I don't want to pay too much, would these be OK, they do heart as well, some have instructions and cases.

I have a very low oxygen saturation level. Lows around 70% to high of 88%. What are some possible causes? In the last four months, I've had a Ct scan, Hide-a-Scan, two heart studies, three halter monitors, sleep study,Sonogram, full body bone scan, endoscopy and complete blood work up. My cholesterol was slightly above normal. The sleep study showed I have sleep apnea. ( I now wear a C-Pap @ 17 psi w/ 5 lpm o2). The endoscopy showed some signs of mild damage due to aspirin and tylenol taken for the pain. The CT scan showed mild degeneration of L1 & L2 but otherwise nothing significant. (History of prostate cancer. Dr thought maybe the cancer had metastasized into the spine but bone scan showed no evidence of cancer) Moderate to severe pain in RUQ was diagnosed as costal condritis. Symptoms of this are improving. Bone chilling fatigue haunts me. I'm fairly certain that this is a direct result of the low o2 sats. Any ideas? So far, the doctors have not found out the problem. Thanks!
toddlers oxygen level 83? Hi my cousin is 17 months and she has been put on a saturation monitor to test her oxygen levels. My aunty was given the machine to take home and they will review it tomorrow, she has always had problems with her lungs and has to take thickener in all her liquids. Tonight her oxygen level was 87 and when she coughed it went to 83. She is sleeping at the minute. should this be a cause of concern or will she be ok for the doctors to review it in the morning. Any advice would be great, Thanks
Visiting relatives dilemma...a little long but please read!? I live in Ontario, Canada, so we will be celebrating Thanksgiving next weekend. My husband's family is having everyone over to their house for dinner. The problem is my husband and I don't really want to go now that we know his sister is going. I know it sounds aweful, however we really aren't ready to deal with her. It's a bit of a long story so I will try to just hit the big points. When we found out we were pregnant she was a bit upset. It's not as if she was trying to get pregnant but I think the fact that her baby brother and his wife (me) were pregnant before her bothered her. Well she got pregnant a few months after us, which would be great I thought with the cousins being so close in age, yeah not so much. Her attitude towards my husband and especially progressively got worse the further into her pregnancy, until she just stopped talking to us and ignored our calls. So needless to say this kinda hurt, both my husband and me (she was my maid of honour at our wedding just last summer). Well it got even worse....I experienced some complications with my pregnancy and almost had to be induced at 34 weeks (and had the possibility of induction until 37 weeks when the problem was resolved). Everyone in his family would be calling to check up us and make sure the baby was okay, she did not and continued to ignore us except to say thank you when my husband texted her on her birthday. Anyways I did end up being induced at 39 weeks (again due to complications) and had my daughter on July 20th. She was born with a true knot in her umblicial cord, which caused her distress during the delivery and she ended up in the NICU right after delivery. We later found out that she had a pneumothorax, she had a CPAC on for the first 12 hours and needed to have her oxygen saturation levels monitored for 3 days. Now his sister did call right after she was born (she had been talking to her family and found out I was in the hospital) and my husband told her our daughter was in the NICU. At this point we didn't know what was wrong, the severity of it, or how long. His sister never called back to see what was wrong, if she was okay, or even to see if she had been released. In fact she didn't talk to us again until she phoned to say she had her son a few weeks ago. Needless to say we are both pretty shocked and hurt by her complete lack of concern for our daughter. Anyways she is now planning on making the trip to her parents. I'm really not sure how I am going to feel, or react seeing her after all of this, and I am not sure I really want her around my daughter with how she has been acting. I am seriously wondering if it would be better to skip the face to face meeting (with the kids) until some of the issues have been addressed. Please...anyone have any advice. Also if we don't go to my in-laws we will be inviting his parents to my families dinner (on Monday) so they can still see their granddaughter at Thanksgiving, as our families get along really well.
How do you know if doctors are doing enough for your child if there is so much information for them to review? My daughter's lung collapsed at birth and after three weeks was released from the NICU with no medications or machines. She was sounding very congested and her Dr. finally referred her to an ENT. That Dr. found that her adnoids were growing down into her throat which caused apnea. She is too young for surgery but her apnea monitor sounds often. A sleep study has confirmed that her saturation (blood oxygen) dropped below 70 % at times and put her on oxygen at home when she sleeps which is quite the challenge. Since then she has also been diagnosed with PDA and ASD Heart diseases; Anemia (even with iron suppliments); high platelet count; pulmonary hypertension. I'm at my witts end! I feel that I'm seeing all these different doctors and no one is putting the information together. They are all puzzled at how healthy she looks to have all of these things wrong. Is anyone in a simular situation or could shed some light on what could be going on? She is so precious. God bless!
What must a trainee nurse do? One of my patients named Eric is an 80 year old gentleman who has been discharged from hospital one week ago following an acute exacerbation of COPD. He has suffered from pulmonary disease for 7 years and has recently given up smoking 20 cigarettes a day on the advice of the Practice Nurse. Yesterday evening his daughter found Eric collapsed on the kitchen floor in a breathless and distressed state and phoned for an ambulance. I was on duty when Eric is transferred to your ward for admission to a bed in the bay where you are working today. Eric is receiving 24% oxygen via a venture mask. Your mentor has asked you to take Eric’s temperature, pulse, blood pressure and respiration measurements and record these on an observations chart. Staff Nurse has also said she will show you how to measure his oxygen saturation levels for monitoring Eric’s condition during your shift. My mentor has been discussing aspects of communication with you and particularly about the challenges of communication with someone who is anxious. As you talk to Eric and his daughter, I found out more about him and his health problems. Talking to Eric and his daughter, I realised that they are both in an anxious state since his arrival on the ward. Eric told me that he lives alone in a bungalow and usually manages very well with his daughter’s help. He told me that his daughter visits twice a day and cooks his evening meal. Eric’s daughter told me that he had told her he was unable to find his inhaler and had not taken his steroids yesterday. He has been feeling unwell for the last two days and has had little to eat or drink. He is now breathless, wheezing and expectorating green sputum. What is to be done in this whole situation?

Can anyone advise me about best practice treatment options for a post operative pulmonary embolism? My husband is 48. He is a healthy, normal weight range, very fit non smoker . He had an arthroscopy with some unexpected other repair work done to his femur and knee cap on 22nd Dec.It was done under general anaesthetic which lasted less than four hours. It was a day stay procedure. He was given no asprin, no compression stockings and had no follow up appointment scheduled until 15th January. There was no referral letter to his GP. He was given codeine 60 mg every 6 hours as a pain reliever. He began coughing blood at 9 am 29th Dec and had spent a night with severe pain in his left side...which he didn't tell me about at the time!! He is being treated with Clexane and Warfarin subcutaneously. His oxygen saturation is being monitored. He will be in hospital for a minimum of 3 days. Is this the best course of action?

Am I having DT's or what? I have been an alcoholic for 10 yrs or so and go on heavy binges (3 days straight usually) and usually without much food. Anyways, Last wed. I started drinking heavily and it lasted till fri. night when I threw up for about 5 hrs of and on. Sat. I ate and drank alot trying to recover from lost nutrients and fluids. Since sunday, I've been having a strange gnawing feeling in my solar plexus are, pains in my left arm and a BP averaging 150/95. I went to the E.R. tonight wondering whats going on with my body. They did blood tests, an EKG, and chest X-ray. The doc finally came back and said I'm having DT's and I need to just wait em out and gave me a prescription for .5 mg of Ativan. While I was in my hospital bed i kept noticing my monitor. My heart rate was VERY irregular (going from 35BPM at one point, then 45-100BPM. Up and down it went the whole time I was there and I also had a few PVC's. My oxygen saturation also kept dropping to 90 then back up to 100%. The doc. says I need rest and it'll pass. I should quit worrying and not drink anymore. Well, it scared me to say the least and I dont think he shoulda sent me home with my pulse and BP like that. What should I do? Should I take my Ativan an try to relax or go to another hospital E.R.? Can feel my heart fluttering as I write. Please give me a little info as what to do and what is possibly wrong with me. Thanks.
Neck pain with "Swimmy Head" feeling? I continue to grow more frustrated each day. For well over a year, I have been dealing with days where I feel like I've got a good "buzz" going. First let me start by saying I've been to several Doctors who I believe just like to run tests. I also recognize that anxiety is playing a role to some extent, however; I'm tired of no one coming up with anything to explain the issues. Some of the symptoms include: Pressure / tightness in back of neck extending up to base of skull and down to just below C7-T1 (I have Herniated C5-C6); Tightness in top of chest and back that feels like I have an old time dive helmet on that drapes down in the front and back; Head feels “swirly”, “spacey”, swimmy”; Issues with vision (Feels like it takes time for focus to “catch up”. Also, although everything is blurry, I feel a sense of relief when I take off my glasses. I notice that when wearing the glasses, if they are not just right, it’s like the focus goes out); Very mild feeling of anxiety in chest (probably from acknowledging the other symptoms and the fact that I have three kids, a wife, a dog, stressful job, bills, etc...just like most other people). Some of the more recent testing I've gone for is: Oxygen Saturation - which I've been told to use O2 at night due to low levels. Pulmonary Function test - which I've been told I have minor restriction in the small airways. Sleep Study - I've got mild Apnea with no need for a C-Pap at this time. Chest X-Ray - Clean. Treadmill Stress Test - Good. Heart Monitor for Two Weeks - nothing observed. Echo Cardiogram - Inconclusive, Doctor wants to run a "MUGA" scan to double check what he said might be a slight thickening of the heart walls (mild cardiomyopathy) but it's nothing to worry about. Additionally, I've also had another MRI of my neck which showed sever stenosis in the C5-C6 Disc. So far, as a result of the tests I've gone for....I still have no answers. All I hear is that I shouldn't be having these issues at my age (36). Well....that's nice Doc but guess what...I AM!! Could this all be anxiety or could my herniated disc be causing some of the issues? These are just two simple questions which I can not get a "Doctor" to answer. All I get is "it could be...". I would just like to get some opinions that may help identify the issues so I can try to find different ways to deal with it. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
What do you think of someone who spends their $$ to have a doctor stand by as you sleep? MJ made millions and the way he spent it was to have a doctor by his bed side to administer hospital-grade drug treatments on the hour??!? Does this not strike anyone as completely perverse? If Michael is a gauge of American self-indulgence and self-pity, then I think we might be in trouble, folks. Why didn't he just play a little Brick-Breaker like the rest of us? -- At about 1:30 a.m., Murray gave Jackson 10 mg of Valium. -- At about 2 a.m., he injected Jackson with 2 mg of the anti-anxiety drug Ativan. -- At about 3 a.m., Murray then administered 2 mg of the sedative Versed. -- At about 5 a.m., he administered another 2 mg of Ativan. -- At about 7:30 a.m., Murray gave Jackson yet another 2 mg of Versed while monitoring him with a device that measured the oxygen saturation of his blood. -- At about 10:40 a.m., "after repeated demands/requests from Jackson," Murray administered 25 mg of propofol, the document said.
Continuous Carbon Dioxide (Co2) monitoring from blood? Are there any devices which give me continous carbon dioxide level in blood ? Pulse oximeter which gives Oxygen saturation level of blood does it indirectly gives the level of Co2 in blood ?

Chest X-ray showed right basal haziness seen, opacity seen along the 5th rib in right? bony? parenchymal. CT head showed age related atrophic in brain. CT chest showed anterior mediastinal mass for which CT guided cytology was suggestive of spindle cell neoplasm. PET CT showed non-FDG avid enlarged prostrate gland with significant median lobe hypertrophy protruding into bladder lumen. The fat planes with the recto-sigmoid are obscured at places, non-FDG avid lesion in segment VIII of the liver, bulky faintly FDG left adrenal gland and non-FDG avid, well defined, oval shaped, hyperdense enhancing lesion, likely a lymph node, measuring approx. 5.9 x 3.5 cm in the prevascular region (? Metastases). On clinical examination prostate was found to be enlarged, smooth in consistency and serum PSA level on 30th August, 2010 were 8.0 units. 2 D ECHO showed no RWMA, global LVEF=55%. Ultrasound whole abdomen showed the liver with 4.3 x 3.4 cm hyperechoic lesion in right lobe, there is a well defined hypoechoic lesion measuring 4.8 x 4.3 cm along postero- lateral wall of urinary bladder. Fat planes with prostate are lost. The prostate is enlarged in size and measuring 54 gms. Ultrasound both limb venous Doppler showed patent deep venous system bilateral lower limbs. MRI brain showed small acute lacunar infarct in splenium of corpus callosum. MRI screening revealed degenerative marginal osteophytes involving the cervical, dorsal and lumber vertebral bodies, altered area of signal intensity is seen involving D7 and D9 vertebral body appearing hyperintense on T2 weighted images ? haemangioma. MRI spine cervical showed reversal of cervical curvature with OA changes and compression on thecal sac and cord at C4 – C6 level. Consultation was sought from Dr. Puneet Agarwal (Neurologist) and NCV study is done in both lower limbs and right upper limb with H reflex. MNCS is showing normal latency with reduced CMAP amplitude is seen in right median, bilateral CPN and PTN. Normal MNCS in right ulnar motor. RNS test is showing normal study with 3 Hz & 100 Hz. Patient was admitted in stroke ICU where his conscious level improved and hence extubated. He was shifted to the ward on 10.9.2010 but he remained persistently drowsy in the ward. His electrolyte study showed low sodium levels which was corrected but drowsiness persisted. Neurologist opinion were being sought. He remained drowsy, weak and was not able to communicate. Fibre optic laryngoscopy was planned for vocal cord assessment but relative refused. His leucocyte counts are within normal limits and kidney function tests were also normal. However his drowsiness did not improve. In the evening of 18th September, 2010 patient started developing dyspnea. His oxygen saturation level at room air was falling and hence continuous oxygen was started but the patient’s condition remained unstable and hence shifted to ICU for monitoring where he was intubated and put on ventilator. He developed haematuria on 20.9.2010 and had deranged coagulation profile (INR- 2.1) for which cystoscopy was done and clots were evacuated. Prostatic biopsy was planned at the same sitting but deferred due to deranged INR. Patient was tracheostomised on 23.9.2010 for his poor cough reflex. At present patient has been on tracheostomy tube (T- piece) with 5 litres of oxygen and is maintaining saturation levels of 96-97%. His other parameters are within normal limits. His coagulation profile has improved and his prostatic biopsy has been sent. Serum PSA levels are static (8.89 IU). His blood and urine cultures are sterile and counts are within normal limits. Presently being treated with Actamase, etc.
Sleep Apnea Question? I just had a sleep study done. Results were: 28 sponatneous arousals.' 1 REM arousals 31 Snoring arousals total: 61 Mild, intermittent snoring was noted while supine. Apnea-hypoapnea events per hour .89 1 during REM and 4 events in Non REM Respiratory related arousals per hour: 5.69 Mean Oxygen saturation: 96.61 0 desaturation episodes below 90% with a nadir of 90% Cadiac monitoring: Normal sinus rythm with no significant arrythmias noted. Diagnosis: Mild Obstructive Sleep Apnea syndrome, adult. I am 26, currently BMI of 35, get only about 3 hours a sleep at night with exesseive daytime sleepiness, and have asthma. Should I worry?
Do these sleep study results look bad? I just had a sleep study done. Can someone please read my assignment about ARDS please? Hey i need someone to read my paper and correct any grammar mistakes, and if there's anything missing about the disease in general please don't hesitate to mention them. An Acute respiratory disease syndrome (ARDS) is a life threatening illness that damages the lungs over time. The disease has a mortality rate of 65% and it's more common for men than women to catch ARDS . Pediatrics and infants can be receive with ARDS too. The problem of the disease is caused by the crumpling and the accumulation of fluid in the alveoli sacs. This affect the lungs to deliver poor concentration of oxygen into the blood, which leads to hypoxia. Essentially, ARDS starts to take affect from 24 to 48 hours from the start of incident. As the disease continues to worsen, the lungs will become stiff, heavy and unable to expand properly resulting to pulmonary edema. Eventually, other vital organs will start to malfunction such as the heart, the kidneys and the liver due to the lack of oxygen in the blood. The most common reasons that people get ARDS is caused by any major inflammation or injury to the lungs like aspiration, sepsis, pneumothorax, trauma, massive transfusion of blood products, and drug overdose. Also, Heavy smoking and heavy drinking are other risk factors. Symptoms may include severe difficulty breathing, anxiety, low level blood pressure, agitation, fever and multiple organ failure. Signs of ARDS includes presents of crackle sounds in the lungs, cyanosis, and diaphoresis]. The disease can takes months to cure depending on its severity, however the longer ARDS is delayed for treatment, the more closer it becomes inevitable to cure. Complications. The disease is treated through intensive care unit (ICU) and requires mechanical ventilation support. Patients are given antibiotics, IV fluid, and oxygen for hospital treatment. Essentially on scene, a patient with ARDS will be or might be in respiratory distress. Again, signs may includes, cyanosis, dysnea, diaphoretic, wheezing, and excess muscle usage. Symptoms may include rapid breathing, SOB and organ failure. Paramedics should quickly give 100% oxygen by using a mask, a nasal canula or a combitube, then positioning the patient into a comfortable respiratory position. If possible, medication such as salbutamol can be given to treat ARDS to open the pt's airway, only applicable if the patient fits in the inclusion criteria and has no exclusion concerns. In some cases, patient with severe ARDS will be in grave pain if they move too much. Paramedic may want to check the lungs and any complications that may be present and treat it if they can. These complications may includes multiple organ failure, pneumothorax, and pulmonary fibrosis. A physical examination is necessary to rule out any other problems. Other useful practice are monitoring the patient heart, O2 saturation, and taking vital signs. Patient with ARDS needs hospital care ASAP. Overall when paramedics are dealing with an ARDS call, they must provide breathing support, try to figure out the cause of ARDS and get the patient to the hospital.
